There is a great deal of conjecture as to what the 2025 job market will look like and where the growth will occur. Additionally, there are even more questions surrounding the future of infrastructure jobs, including construction, energy, and communications roles, given that we have seen the subject of a compromised US infrastructure at the forefront of two different presidential administrations with varying interpretations of how to resolve the issue.
In 2022, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), representing one of the most significant government investments in the American economy, energy, security, and climate in the country’s history. The bill strongly emphasizes investments in clean energy production and tax credits rewarding companies for reducing carbon emissions.
However, as the country enters the second Trump administration, the pendulum may swing back towards his opposing view, outlined during his first term in office, which recommended focusing on fossil fuels and reducing alternative energy spending.
One area of infrastructure renewal that both administrations are rallying behind is in the telecommunications sector, mainly broadband expansion, especially in underserved, rural areas. There is speculation that the IRA’s funding could align with the Trump administration’s broadband expansion goals and result in job growth in that area.
To address broadband infrastructure, The Biden administration launched the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, a $42.5 billion program within the IRA to expand high-speed Internet access by funding planning, infrastructure deployment, and adoption programs across all 50 states, as well as US commonwealths and territories. The funding has already been distributed to the states, which are currently awarding money to companies building broadband networks. This is projected to propel job growth in the following areas:
Broadband Network Installation and Construction – fiber optic technicians, cable installation specialists, broadband infrastructure project managers, and construction workers
Telecommunications Technicians – network technicians, telecommunications installers, and repair technicians
Data and IT Support Roles – support specialists, systems administrators, data analysts, and cybersecurity experts
Broadband Customer Service and Sales – customer service representatives, sales professionals, and account managers
Project Management and Policy Roles – broadband project managers, regulatory compliance officers, and public policy specialists
Training and Educational Jobs – educators and trainers in broadband technology and network management
Software Development and Digital Services – software developers, web developers, and application engineers
Despite generally agreeing with Biden about expanding broadband access, the Trump administration may differ on how that access is realized. While analysts don’t believe he will be able to claw back spending on in-progress projects, BEAD relies heavily on fiber broadband while Trump and members of his inner circle are looking at satellite options. However, from a job growth perspective, we may see overlap in the skills required to support this industry vertical and projected growth in the need for:
Engineers – electrical, modeling, and mechanical
IT – software, hardware, and network engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity experts, and UX designers
Operations – quality managers, fleet managers, program managers, and supply chain managers
Whether implementations continue to favor fiber options or pivot towards satellite solutions, both paths require significant support staff in all professional areas, including finance, sales, marketing, legal, and human resources.
