Plugging the Talent Gap: Solving the Electrician Shortage Crisis

After two decades of steady but modest growth, electricity consumption in the U.S. is projected to surge by 50% by 2050. This dramatic rise is fueled by the rapid expansion of AI applications and cloud computing and the growing reliance on electric-powered systems to replace manual and fossil-fuel-based operations. To meet this increased demand, the nation’s electrical grid must be significantly upgraded and expanded, requiring a strong, skilled workforce.

Yet the U.S. faces a critical labor shortage. While the employment of electricians is projected to grow at twice the average rate of all occupations through 2032, with over 84,000 new jobs expected, the demand is far outpacing the available talent. Compounding the issue, nearly 30% of the current electrician workforce is at or nearing retirement age, threatening to widen a significant gap.

Rich Stinson, CEO of Southwire, a leading wire and cable manufacturer, puts it starkly:

“The U.S. is facing a troubling trend in its electrical workforce. While we add around 3,000 electricians annually, we lose approximately 10,000, resulting in a net loss of 7,000 skilled workers each year. This workforce is crucial to implementing the changes we need.”

Building the Pipeline: A Strategic Imperative

Closing this talent gap demands urgent, coordinated action. Employers, educators, and industry associations must invest in robust talent development pipelines. Key strategies include:

Southwire stands out as a leader in these efforts, with a suite of innovative programs designed to raise awareness, build technical skills, and retain talent in the electrical trades.

Southwire’s Workforce Development Initiatives
  1. 12 for Life® – High School Pre-Apprenticeship Program
In collaboration with the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) of Atlanta and Georgia, Southwire’s 12 for Life® program offers high school students a 36-hour Skills-Based Electrical Installer curriculum. Participants gain hands-on experience in electrical theory, tool safety, and pipe bending. Graduates earn OSHA 10 certification, first aid credentials, and a pathway into IEC’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
  2. Maintenance Apprenticeship Program
This two-year program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training in Southwire’s manufacturing facilities. Conducted in partnership with local technical colleges, it prepares apprentices for roles such as millwrights and electronic technicians, addressing the specific needs of the wire and cable manufacturing sector.
  3. Southwire™ Solutions University (SSU)
SSU delivers best-in-class training for electrical professionals. The curriculum blends classroom learning with hands-on practice, emphasizing the safe and efficient installation of wire and cable using Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions® innovations—boosting safety and productivity on the job site.
  4. Electrical Association Partnerships
Southwire works closely with industry associations to support apprenticeship programs and continuing education. Initiatives such as the Top Gun Apprentice award recognize outstanding performance and encourage excellence in the trade.

A Defining Moment for the Nation’s Future

The electrician shortage presents both a major challenge and a powerful opportunity. As electrification accelerates and digital infrastructure becomes more integral to everyday life, the need for a skilled electrical workforce is more urgent than ever.

Southwire’s scalable and inclusive talent development programs offer a model for others to follow. Solving this crisis will require bold, sustained public-private partnerships, strategic investments in workforce training, and a national commitment to empowering the next generation of electrical professionals.
